Popularly known as “Ooty of the poor”, Yercaud is a picturesque hill station in the district of Salem in Tamil Nadu. Thanks to its extraordinary natural beauty and salubrious climate, Britishers has established this beautiful place as a summer resort during 19th century.

Although located near the industrial town Salem, Yercaud has very well maintained its natural charm. Nestled in the Servarayan range of Eastern ghats, Yercaud is an offbeat destination of Tamil Nadu. This cool retreat of the state is perched at a height of 1, 500 m (4, 920 ft) above sea level.

It is believed that Yercaud Tamilnadu Tourism has derived its name from a tranquil lake which is situated at the centre of the town. While your visit to Yercaud, don't forget to peep into the vast coffee plantations and orange grooves which were introduced in the region by the Britishers.

Yercaud Lake:

Located at the heart of the town, Yercaud lake is a major tourist attraction. This picturesque lake comes alive during the month of May when a spectacular summer festival is organized. Yercaud Lake is surrounded by gardens and trees and provides boating facility to the visitors. If you like to paddle the boat yourself then the paddling boats are a good option otherwise you can also hire a boatman rowing it for you as you relax in the calm waters of the lake.

Lady's Seat:

On the south-west side of Yercaud Hill Station, there are cluster of rocks which gives onlookers a panoramic view of distant Salem and the winding road-up. This beautiful spot is known as Lady's seat. There is a steep drop of about 200 feet below from this point.

Killiyur Fall:

The gushing water of Kiliyur waterfall also very famous among the vacationers. Positioned at a distance of about 3 km from the Yercaud lake, Killiyur waterfall is a fabulous place for photography. The ideal time to visit this waterfall is immediately after the monsoons. You can see the surplus water from the Yercaud Lake and other points of the Shevaroy Hills fall deep into the Killiyur Valley below, making a 300 feet waterfall.

The Servarayan Temple: Yercaud

Built atop the Servarayan hill at an elevation of 5, 326 m, Servarayan temple is a narrow and dark cave having the God Servarayan and the Goddess Kaveri inside. During the month of May, local tribes celebrate their annual festival in the Servarayan temple.

Bear's Cave:

The Bear's cave is situated near the Norton Bungalow on the way to Servarayan temple. It is an important tourist spot as it is considered one of the six abodes of Lord Subramanya.

The Grange:

Built in 1820's by the then District Collector of Salem, M D Cockburn, the Grange is one of the oldest buildings in Yercaud.

Anna Park:

Another important place of visit in Yercaud is the Anna Park which is located near the lake. This park has a collection of the natural species of plants and trees seen around Shevaroy hills. Flower shows are conducted in this park during summer months.

There is a breathtaking Japanese garden inside this park in which plants are grown in Japanese style. Children can enjoy playing in the garden. It is a well maintained garden and is worth a visit
