Ooty or Udhagamandalam is the capital of the Nilgiri district, rightly described as "Queen of Hill Stations" by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. It is situated at an altitude of 2,240 meters above sea level. Ooty The climate of this place is generally pleasant and thus suitable for leisure tours. The major attractions of this hill station are the green valleys, beautiful mountains and the vast tea estates. An added attraction for the tourists to Udagamandalam is the mountain train journey on a ratchet and pinion track which commences from Kallar, near Mettupalayam and wends its way through many hair-raising curves and fearful tunnels and chugs along beside deep ravines full of verdant vegetation, gurgling streams and tea gardens.
One of the nice season to visit Ooty is during the annual Tea and Tourism Festivals when the hill station bustles with many tea lovers of the country. Many international travelers also visit this beautiful place during this time of the year.
The summer festival also attract many visitors to Ooty in Tamil Nadu. The gorgeous greenery of the Nilgiris are at their best during this season. The surrounding landscape is also adorned with multiple colors at this time of the year. |

Spread over a total area of 55 acre, the Botanical Garden in Ooty was lad out long back in the year 1847. Ever since then the Ooty Botanical garden has been well maintained and today it is the responsibility of the Horticulture Department of the Tamil Nadu Government. The Botanical garden in Ooty is located within the city limits of Ooty and is a piece of treasure in the lap of the mountains. Visited by tourists all around the year, the Ooty Botanical Garden is a major tourist spot in the town.

The Botanical garden in Ooty receives a total rainfall of around 140 cm and the temperature rises to a maximum of 28 degree centigrade. The winters are bitterly cold and the temperature often falls below 0 degree centigrade. The Botanical Garden of Ooty has plants from all over the world and has been decorated very aesthetically. The most attractive parts of the garden are the Lilly pond with color full flowers and the Italian garden.
At the summit of the Dodabetta Peak is an observatory which is open to the tourists. The observatory has two telescopes which can provide a perfect view of the Mysore plateau and the plains of Coimbatore. Inaugurated back in the year 1983, the observatory is maintained by the Tourism Development corporation of Tamil Nadu. The Dodabetta Peak is visited by thousands of visitors and even in the off seasons the place receives quite a number of visitors. The picturesque location and the scenic splendor of the place makes it one of the most magnificent sites in Ooty.
A home to several rare species, the Ooty Botanical garden is a museum of plants and animals. The paper bark tree, the monkey puzzle tree, ferns, orchids and various other plants are spread about in myriad hues.
An unique element in the Ooty Botanical garden is a tree trunk which is now a fossil. This tree trunk is about 20 million years old and is displayed at the Ooty Botanical garden for the tourists.
Every year in the month of May, a "Summer festival" is celebrated in the Ooty Botanical Garden. The main attraction of this festival is the flower show and the display of the items of the Toda, a native tribe.

The beautiful Rose Garden adds to the charm of the lovely land of Ooty. The Centenary Rose Park was declared as the `Garden of Excellence' by the World Federation of Rose Societies.
The Rose Garden was established in the year 1995. The Garden was founded to celebrate the 100th Annual Flower Show (AFC) at the Government Botanical Garden in Ooty. When the garden was initially laid there were 1919 varieties of rose, including floribundas, miniatures, hybrid teas, polyanthas and creepers.

New varieties are being included in the collection every year. Presently, the garden is said to have nearly 3000 varieties and very soon the 5000 mark will be crossed. The Centenary Rose Park in Ooty is spread over a huge area of more than four hectares of land in five terraces.
At present, the Rose Garden has the distinction of being the only garden in the country with the largest collection of roses. People who are passionate about flowers and roses can come here to enjoy the beauty of a huge variety of roses such as Hybrid Tea Roses, Ramblers, miniature roses, Floribundas and many more. Some of the main attractions of the garden are roses of strange colors like black and green. |

The Ooty Lake is one of the many tourist attractions of the magical hill station of Ooty in Tamil Nadu. The Ooty Lake enhances the beauty of the land decorated with blue hills, long stretches of green meadows, picturesque tea gardens and pleasing climate.
The Ooty Lake in the Nilgiri Hills has a length of more than two Kilometers and roughly forms a 'L' shape. The crystal clear Ooty Lake is the venue for various leisure activities like angling and boating. The boat house is the main center of entertainment in Ooty. Just beside the boat house, the children's park is present with the toy-train, which is equally favorite with the kids and the adults. One can also indulge in horse riding on the banks of the lake.

The artificial Ooty Lake is the master mind of the founder of the hill station - John Sullivan. He built the Ooty Lake in 1825. The streams coming down the hills were trapped by a temporary dam and the lake was formed with the accumulated water.
Boating in the Ooty Lake is real fun with the availability of all types of boats like paddle boats, Shikaras, rowing boats, canoes etc. The dawn to dusk boating service keeps the visitors, tourists and revelers entertained. The boat races during the summers are great crowd pullers. The Ooty Lake is a very favorite site for campers and picnickers. Watching the 'sun go down' from the banks of the lake is a never forgetting experience. |

Kandal Cross is a holy shrine of Roman Catholics located in Ooty in the state of Tamil Nadu. The Catholics of the Nilgiri region call it as the "Calvary of Tamil Nadu". Kandal Cross is a shrine which is considered very holy and is referred to as the Jerusalem of the East. It is located on the west of Railway Station of Ooty, which is 3 km away. The culture of Ooty has been influenced by Christians as the town was initially established by Britishers.
The Kandal Cross in Ooty has a relic of the true cross, brought to the church by a delegate of Apostles. It is considered very holy by the Roman Catholics. They believe that it showers heavenly blessings to the pilgrims and tourists who visit the shrine.

The Dodabetta Peak is one of The highest point of the district of Ooty, the Dodabetta Peak is at a height of 2,623 meters. One of the most picturesque location, Dodabetta Peak ia located at a distance of 10 kilometers from the main town of Ooty. Although the Dodabetta Peak is mostly behind a veil of mist, on a rare clear day one can catch the sight of the landscape below which looks like a painted canvas.

The name Dodabetta Peak originated from the Kannada words "Dodda" and "Betta" which means big and mountain respectively. The most salient feature of Dodabetta Peak are the flattened curves at its peak. The hollows of these slopes are wrapped with Sholas, flowering sub-elphine shrubs, Rhododendron trees, and thick coarse grasses which gives a green color to the mountain.

The Kodanadu's View Point lies within 16 Kilometers of Kotagiri. The panoramic view from the watch tower of the View Point will give the feeling of being on top of the world. A bird's eye view from the Kodanadu View Point enchants the visitors. They can watch the majestic flow of the River Mayor sashaying through the hills. It is also very close to Coonoor. The pykara dam which is 19 km from Ooty. The river has a dam and power plant. There is a breathtaking scenery. The falls, about 6 km from the bridge on the main road, are best in July, but they are also worth visiting from August to December. There is a forest rest House at Pykara. A boat house by the Pykara falls and Dam is added attractions to the tourists.Pykara boasts of well protected fenced Sholas, Toda settlements, undistributed grassy meadows and also a good wildlife habitat.

Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary: |

The Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary, which is at a distance of 67 kms from Ooty and stands at a height of 1,140m in the Nilgiri hills. The park, which has been renamed the Jayalalitha Wildlife Sanctuary, covers an area of 322 sq. kms of forestland and is a continuation of the Bandipur National Park.
The Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary was the first Wildlife Reserve in South India. A remarkable feature of this Park is its terrain, which is very varied, with hills, ravines, valleys and swamps. Even the vegetation is quite varied. There are blooming trees like Indian Labumusum, Aredesia, Solanancea, and others like Bamboos (Bambusa Arundinacea) Natural teak (Tectona Grandis), Crenulata/Terminalia Tomontosa, Anogeissus latifolia, Terminalia and Grewia,

The Wildlife sanctuary has one of the largest elephant populations in the country. Other animals to be found in this National Park are, tigers and leopards, chital, dhole panther Gaur, Banner, Macaque, Common langur, Sloth Bear, Python, Otter, Crocodiles (mugger), barking deer, Four Horned Antelope, giant flying squirrel, Sambar, Hyena, Wild Dog, Wild Boar, Mouse Deer, Spotted Deer, Porcupine, Jackal, Hare, and Mongoose.
The Birds that can be seen at this National Park are, peacock, gray jungle fowl, the shama, the magpie-robin, the red spur fowl, the gray partridge quails, malabar grey hornbill, bulbuls, goggle eyed plover, Malabar whistling thrush, spotted babbler, small green barbet, green pigeons, the brown dove, mynahs, etc. |
